The EBS and ORR are leading forces on the international music scene. World-class musicians and singers from many nationalities come together to share in the distinctive vision of music director, John Eliot Gardiner, in groundbreaking projects that span eight centuries of musical masterpieces.

The English Baroque Soloists (EBS) and the Orchestra Revolutionnaire et Romantique (ORR) fall, together with the Monteverdi Choir,  under the three Monteverdi ensembles. They are a leading force on the international music scene. World-class musicians and singers from many nationalities come together to share in the distinctive vision of  music director, John Eliot Gardiner, in groundbreaking projects that span eight centuries of musical masterpieces. From the monumental to the intimate, from sacred music to opera, from early music to the 20th century, often in unexpected combinations, each projects strives for excellence.

‘The three Monteverdi ensembles, founded and directed by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, constitute a unique combination. The Choir and both orchestras work independently of each other but also as equal partners with a remarkable synergy, which kindles a lyrical and intense sound.

The ensembles challenge people’s expectations of classical music. In our concerts and education work we communicate our passion for what we do, and strive to involve everyone in what great music has to say to us today. We rehearse projects intensively to communicate every sung text with conviction and to present instrumental music as a living dialogue. Every inch of a stage or church interior is exploited in our search for immediacy and drama, so that the visual impact of our performances enhances what an audience hears. There is always a palpable sense of occasion to any of our concerts.’
